From Chattanooga Times Free Press…

About 7.2 million unauthorized migrants were employed in the United States in March 2005, accounting for about 4.9 percent of the civilian labor force, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Twenty-four percent of all workers were employed in farming occupations, 17 percent in cleaning, 14 percent in construction and 12 percent in food preparation.

Rod Miller, chairman of the Southeast Tennessee Council of Conservative Citizens Chapter, said he’s glad the federal government finally is doing something to enforce immigration laws.

“I would just like to see (Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel) more active in raiding employers in this area,” he said. “Private industry has to understand that they have to comply with the immigration laws just as they obey the tax code.”
