Media may have exaggerated Sioux seccession claims.

CofCC.org News Team

Russel Means, the leader of the Secessionist Sioux Indians, does not actually hold a leadership position in the tribe. He ran unsuccessfully for president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in 2006.

A news report by USA Today, which was picked up by a number of foreign press agencies, is simply an article that reported Russell Means’ press release as a factual news story. USA Today did not investigate or validate the story before reporting it.

Whether or not any actual leaders of the Lakota Sioux Indian Tribe are advocating Secession remains to be seen.
