Ukraine marks the Holodomore.
During 1932-1933 the Soviet Regime blockaded sections of the Ukraine to purposely starve to death millions of Ukrainians. It was the largest of numerous acts of Soviet genocide, and perhaps the single biggest mass murder in European history.
Leading authorities in the Ukraine place the death toll around 7.5 million.
Lazar Kaganovich is widely accused of being the mastermind behind the Holodomore and for the destruction of Christian monuments, churches, and cathedrals. Kaganovich was born to a poor Jewish family in the Ukraine that only spoke Yiddish. Yet, “Iron Lazar,” rose to become to a leading figure in the Soviet government in 1922 and continued to hold prominent positions until 1957.
Kaganovich is famous for the quote “Mother Russia is cast down. We have ripped away her skirts.” He died at age 98 in 1991. No one has ever been prosecuted for the Holodomore.
The Holodomore is still causing tension between the Ukraina and Russia today. Eight of the US State Department Wikileak cables make references to it concerning current political relations in Eastern Europe and the Caucuses.
