Celebrations for the 2013 Inauguration of Mayor-Elect Chokwe Lumumba and the Jackson City Council will begin on Friday, June 28, 2013 and continue through Monday, July 1, 2013. The Mayor-Elect will be hosting events citywide in an effort to include all Jacksonians as part of his Administration’s theme of “One City, One Aim, One Destiny.” Festivities include in-ward celebrations throughout the city, a prayer service and a People’s Inaugural Celebration. A more detailed schedule of events is below.

Friday, June 28, 2013 Inaugural Kickoff Block Party at Smith Park from 3 – 7 pm. This event is free, family friendly, and open to all Jackson residents. There will be free food, games, and entertainment.

June 29 – 30, 2013 Mayor-Elect Lumumba will be participating in neighborhood celebrations taking place in every ward throughout the city. The in-ward celebrations are free and open to Jackson residents. The celebrations will be located at various public parks and are scheduled as follows:

Ward Celebrations Schedule for Saturday, June 29th

• Presidential Hills 10 am – 1 pm

• Grove Park. 12 noon – 3 pm

• Westside Park 2 pm – 5 pm

• Battlefield Park 4 pm – 7 pm

Ward Celebrations Scheduled for Sunday, June 30th

• Parham Bridges Park 1 pm – 4pm

• Leavell Woods Park 3 pm – 6pm

8 am An Inaugural Prayer Service at Word and Worship Church with Bishop Jeffrey Stallworth presiding and other esteemed metro-Jackson clergymen offering prayer and words of spiritual inspiration to Mayor-Elect Lumumba and other elected official attendees. This event is open to the public.

12 pm The People’s Inaugural Ceremony will be held at the Jackson Convention Complex. This swearing –in ceremony will be followed by a light reception at the same location. Congressman Bennie G. Thompson will be officiating. Special guest is Myrlie Evers-Williams.

7 pm People’s Inaugural Celebration will also be at the Jackson Convention Complex. The dress requirement: appropriate.

These events are free and open to the public.

I was privileged to briefly participate in the victory of one of the most radical mayors in U.S. history, right in the heart of Dixie, and to glimpse a new Black-led progressive coalition that intends to fight for the state. Nina Simone famously cussed Mississippi white supremacy in her 1964 civil rights anthem “Mississippi Goddam.” (see video above.) The election of Chokwe Lumumba is now an occasion to say “Jackson Hell Yes!” – Bob Wing, ethnic Chinese Marxist activist.
