BBC: Peak oil has passed, Europe is running out of fossil fuels
Europe is way ahead of the US in solar technology and fuel efficient vehicles. Outfitting a home in Germany with solar panels is half the cost of doing it in the USA. Europe is also much more motorcycle friendly than the USA, and has high speed rail line networks. However, these things are not preventing a rapidly approaching fuel shortage crises. One that could dramatically reverse EU hostility toward Russia.
Deposits are coal, oil, and natural gas have simply been mined longer in Europe than other parts of the world.
Britain has 107 offshore oil platforms. As recently as the year 2000, Britain was still providing for all of it’s own oil and still had enough left over to export oil as well. Production peaked around 1998 at 150 million cubic meters. Last year it was about 50 million. Britain is now 16 years past “peak oil.”
In Norway, “peak oil” has come years ahead of schedule. Production is now in decline each year in Norway as well.
Many parts of the world still have vast, largely untapped, oil fields. This includes parts of the United States. However, for Europe the obvious choice to get oil and natural gas from Russia.
In just over five years Britain will have run out of oil, coal and gas, researchers have warned.
A report by the Global Sustainability Institute said shortages would increase dependency on Norway, Qatar and Russia.
There should be a “Europe-wide drive” towards wind, tidal, solar and other sources of renewable power, the institute’s Prof Victor Anderson said.
The government says complete energy independence is unnecessary, says BBC environment analyst Roger Harrabin.
The report says Russia has more than 50 years of oil, more than 100 years of gas and more than 500 years of coal left, on current consumption.
By contrast, Britain has just 5.2 years of oil, 4.5 years of coal and three years of its own gas remaining.
France fares even worse, according to the report, with less than year to go before it runs out of all three fossil fuels.Coal, oil and gas resources in Europe are running down and we need alternatives”Prof Victor AndersonGlobal Sustainibility Institute
Dr Aled Jones, director of the institute, which is based at Anglia Ruskin University, said “heavily indebted” countries were becoming increasingly vulnerable to rising energy prices.
“The EU is becoming ever more reliant on our resource-rich neighbors such as Russia and Norway, and this trend will only continue unless decisive action is taken,” he added.
The report painted a varied picture across Europe, with Bulgaria having 34 years of coal left.
Germany, it was claimed, has 250 years of coal remaining but less than a year of oil.
Notes: Wind energy is a total scam that has to be heavy subsidized by taxpayer dollars and causes catastrophic environmental damage. Wind turbines in the USA are wiping out birds and bats, especially rare predatory birds. Most wind turbines in the US are being subsidized by Federal tax dollars and state tax dollars, making them little more than a mafia like scam on the public.
Countries like Germany and China are rapidly advancing in solar panel technology. In the USA, the Obama administration gave tens of Billions to the family and friends of Democrat party for solar panel R&D. Most of this was completely wasted. Some of the people receiving the money have gone bankrupt and even left huge piles of toxic waste for taxpayer to clean up. After Democrats blew tens of billions on failed R&D, Harry Reid’s $5 Billion solar farm project in Nevada calls for a Chinese company to provide the solar panels.
