GREELEY – Two teens could face nearly a half century in jail after the girl they were babysitting died of blunt force trauma on December 6. The Weld County District Attorney’s Office charged 16-year-old Heather Trujillo and her boyfriend, 17-year-old Lamar Roberts, as adults after 7-year-old Zoe Garcia died while under their supervision. Zoe was Trujillo’s younger half-sister.

Both teens were charged with one count of child abuse resulting in death, a class two felony. They could each face up to 48 years in prison if convicted. An autopsy later revealed that Zoe had a broken right wrist, multiple bruises and internal bleeding throughout the body. It said she died from blunt force trauma and authorities categorized her manner of death as homicide.

The grandmother of the twins, Peggy Jeffries, says she had concerns about the household. “I was concerned about them eating and being well taken care of,” Jeffries said.

Her concern peaked when she picked up Zoe from school one day and says she found bruises on Zoe’s arms and chest. Zoe told Jeffries the bruises came from Roberts. Jeffries says she contacted Social Services, but claims they never took the necessary action to prevent this tragedy.
