AMHERST – As she prepared to witness Barack Obama’s inauguration, a local college professor and anti-racism activist was attacked on the street in Washington, D.C., last weekend and seriously injured.
JoAnne Jones was walking toward her daughter’s home around 7 p.m. Jan. 16, carrying her pocketbook and pulling a rolling suitcase, when the attack occurred. The assailant used a brick to beat her on the head and hands, said Patricia Romney, a friend from Amherst who went to Washington to help her.
