Communist activists beat and torture Ukrainian nationalists

Communist activists, marked by red ribbons and armbands, drag captured Ukrainian nationalists through the street. The victims look like young teenage boys. The crowd beats and kicks the victims while chanting Marxist slogans.

After the rampage, the mob tore down a Ukrainian flag from a government building and replaced it with a Russian flag.

It took place in Kharkiv, the second largest city in the Ukraine. It is 50% Ukrainian, 43% Russian, and 3% Jewish. It was the first Ukrainian city to recognize the Soviet government in 1917. It was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the base for the regime.

Last January a Ukrainian protest leader was captured by Communist activists. He was feared dead, but emerged eight days later with serious injuries from being tortured.
