Israel has been repeatedly accused of conducting airstrikes that directly aided Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra. Shiites accuse Israel of secretly backing al-Qaeda and ISIS in the region.

Now five Hezbollah members, including prominent figures, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Golan Heights. The Syrian army is currently fighting al-Nusra in the Golan Heights. Hezbollah fighters are actively involved in fighting Sunni Jihadists, especially al-Nusra and ISIS.

Among the dead is the son of the late former leader of Hezbollah, the commander of Hezbollah’s anti-ISIS operation, and an Iranian adviser.

The attack will be used as confirmation of anti-Israel conspiracy theories in the Shiite world, and could prompt retaliation against Israel by Shiites.

Israel is bracing for potential retaliation tonight after an Israeli military helicopter crossed into Syria and killed five Hezbollah fighters, including some key figures in the group’s anti-ISIS operations, along with one Iranian who was traveling with them.

Among the slain were Mohammed Issa, the commander for all operations against ISIS, an Iranian adviser named Ali Reza al-Tabatabai, and perhaps most significantly, Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of a former Hezbollah military leader.

The attack is a serious blow to anti-ISIS operations in Syria, as the Assad government has increasingly relied on Hezbollah fighters, led by Issa, to resist the jihadists’ expansion deeper into their territory.
